I was listening to a debate between the sheriff of Maricopa County Az and some union goon about the new Arizona law regarding illegal imigration. The debate was heated between the two. It appeared that Obama called out his union goons to disrupt the enforcement of the new law. The sheriff kept explaining how they currently enforce the law and arest illigals when they find them in the normal course of law enforement. The sheriff said that about 15% turn out to be illegals. Rather than turn them back out on the street, he locks them up until ICE picks them up. All of this seemed normal to me, but the union goon kept saying that he "thinks" that with the new law the sheriff and his law enforcement people will start "profiling" and picking on people who look spanish. From my perspective, I don't see how we can have laws that keep people from "thinking" what ever they want. The union goon's only arguement was that this new law made him "think". The union goon could not site a single case of profiling.
By the way, what is wrong with "profiling". If you see a driving erratic, but not breaking any law can the police pull the person over? Apparently driving erratically is a charactoristic of a person who might have some other serious driving problem. Sounds like some kind of "profile" to me. Is there really a law against "profiling" based on how a person looks? We know that 50% of black males between the ages of 25 and 35 are currently in jail. We also know that a person commits an average of 5 crimes before the are caught and put in jail. That mean there must be a high percentage of the 50% who are not currently in jail who have already commited some crime but have not been caught. Now if you look at people who are over 65 and in wheel chairs, the percentage of these who have commited a crime is very low. Should the police be allowed to "profile" these people to bottom of the list of suspected criminals? If the person shook hands in a funny way or wore a turban or had a black beard, could that be the basis of "profiling". How about people with tatoo's or people who were fat?
