Condemnation of GMO is next just behind global warming. You would think that some think that takes up so much of our worry that people would know something about the subject. Here comes some light!
My first encounter with GMO was about 1953 when I was on a field trip with my 4H club to Stanford University where the American Breeder Service kept their bulls. They had a bull there that had very special proven genetics that increased the milk production of his female babies. They showed us how they collected seaman from the bulls to be used for artificial insemination. They explain that they searched for bulls that, by accident, ended up with special genetics. The way they knew those bulls had special genetics was by breeding them to cows and seeing how their calves performed. This is the first time I heard the words, "selective breeding". All of your different domestic dogs came from wolves and are different from wolves only due to "selective breeding". Mother Nature "modified" some of the wolf genes and us humans took advantage of it. Does it really matter if Mother Nature modified the genes or if they were changed by Sun light or some human process? I don't think so.
If you look at human history, you will find that thousands of years ago us humans started noticing that some corn or potato plants produced bigger corps. They "selected" the best plants and collected their seeds to plant their next year's crop. Did those plants have modified genes? You bet! It is clear that millions of us humans would be starving to death today if us humans had not used "selective breeding" for the past thousand years.
