If you ever want to get confused, just start checking into Electric Car batteries. I know that 98% of our population does not know anything about batteries. In this blog, I am going to try to shed a little more light on the subject, but do not expect this to be a total explanation. I have worked with batteries for a very long time. I have even entertained my grandchildren by making batteries by sticking nails into different fruits and vegetables, like potatoes and oranges. The principle is the same as with the batteries you buy at the store. With all the push for electric cars, we all need to know a lot more about batteries.
Most people do not know that the very first automobiles were powered by batteries and electric motors. It was several years later that the first internal combustion engine car came along. Steam engine cars came before internal combustion engine cars too. You all need to know that. In the end, for all kinds of reason, the internal combustion engine car won out and that is where we are today. Now on too batteries.
Energy stored in a battery is measured in "Watts" and "Time". Things like voltage and amperes figure into the calculation, but in the end it is Watts X Time or watt hours or "wh". On your energy bill they will show it in terms of kwh or kilo wh. This means 1,000 wh and will have a cost of about $0.15. Next, Horsepower is one common way to measure mechanical power, but power is still power, all the same. For ref, one horsepower times one hour is equal to about 3/4 of a kwh. I may use this later. With me so far?
Since electric cars depend on energy stored in the battery, let's shift to how we can compare batteries. I blogged while back about the Tesla electric car and their claim to be the leader on the basis that they had a battery that could store a kwh of energy in their battery costing $500. They claimed that this was much better than all the other car companies and thus they were more likely of ending up with the "best" electric car. You know me and that I pride myself in my grasp of 4th grade math. Let's look deeper into this $500 one kwh battery and to do that, let's compare on the basis of the cost on just "one" wh. The Tesla has a cost of just $0.50 per wh.
Next, I checked out Sam's Club to see what their 6volt golf cart battery would cost per wh. They had a deep cycle 6 volt golf cart battery that had a cost of $84.52 that could put out 20 amps for one hour. I do not know if it was their objective to confuse or not, but to make any kind of comparison this has to be converted to wh. Using 4th grade math, it works out to 120 wh. Next we do long division and come up with $0.70 per wh. This is clearly more than the Tesla battery, but Sam's price was retail and Tesla's was "cost". If Tesla expects to make a profit, I would expect their retail price to be about the same. The point is that with all the hoop-la, the fancy Tesla battery is not any more economical than the one from Sam's Club, but there is more.
Just to keep this interesting, I checked with Harbor Freight to see what the numbers showed on their cordless drill battery. It has a retail price of $10.40. The spec's show that it can store 23.4 wh. Again, the 4th grade math and we have a cost of $0.44 per wh. This means that I can buy a battery right now from Harbor Freight that is more economical to power a car or anything else than what Tesla had published as their "goal"!!!!
You have to ask, "Who is minding the store?" when it comes to investing tax money into electric cars when the battery from Harbor Freight at retail has a cost less than that being promised by Tesla. Where are all the electrical engineers that we have graduated in the last 50 years? Why don't they speak up and pull back the curtain?
PS----I checked the latest on Tesla's battery and found that the price of their battery works out to really be $0.75 per wh rather than the $0.50 that I showed above. That still makes the Harbor Freight battery at $0.44 per wh has a cost of almost half that of the Tesla battery. Where is all this Tesla technology anyway? The Tesla battery is made up of 6,831 Lithium-Ion flashlight batteries that each can store 7.75 wh and have a cost of $5.85 each for a total price of $40,000.

I Get No Respect
Remember the late Rodney Dangerfield, how he used to say, "I get no respect"? Most of us used to just laugh at this, but the Black community seems to have taken it to heart. They have even gone so far as to define a new class of respect and that is "disrespect". We hear them say and sometime are willing to fight if some one "disrespects" them. I am trying to figure out what all this means and why.
I was raised with the idea that respect was something that was earned, not some kind of God given thing. Why do Blacks seem to expect respect if they have done nothing to earn that respect? That is the theme of this blog.
What kinds of things does a person have to do to earn respect, or what kinds of things that a person should "not" do to earn respect? What I would like to do is to explore both of these points. Doing the right things and not doing the wrong things is 100% under the mental control of the individual. It is one of those even handed concepts that is not based on wealth or station in life. If anything better fit the concept of American Freedom, I don't know what it would be. There is another side point to all this and that is "pride". To my way of thinking, pride is a double edged sword. Even in the Bible, they warn about the excess of pride. It is not the same thing as respect. You earn respect and pride you just create. I think that Blacks tend to mix respect and pride and it is the pride part that appears to be the one that gets them into trouble.
What does a person have to do to earn respect? It is a different thing within different groups. What one has to do to gain the respect of a bunch of drug dealers is a lot different from what would be required for a socially responsible group. My point is that we need to be sure that we are doing things to earn respect from the right group. Look at Blacks again. Are they doing things to earn respect from only other Blacks or are they doing things to earn respect from the general population? This whole process is a classical feed back control system. If the group in question is going down hill and you are doing things to earn respect from that group, you will be doing things that also take you down hill. It is the same for a group that is going up. Parents call these peer groups and if you fall into the "wrong" peer group and try to earn their respect, you end up just like that peer group. This is a simple concept and we all know how it works. So why is this important for the Black community?
As it stands now, the Black community has the highest out of wedlock birth rate, highest high school dropout rate, highest crime rate, highest unemployment rate and about the highest in social irresponsibility rate, if there was such and index. As stated above, each person is totally in charge of their own conduct and how it affects earning respect. Rather than going around and expecting respect, the Black community needs to rethink their whole concept of respect and disrespect. They need to look at a much larger picture than just their local Black community when it comes to defining respect and understanding what they have to do to earn that respect. This is not an easy job and that may be the reason that so little progress has been made, when, in fact, they have been going backwards while most of the world has been going forward.
I would like to see a civil debate about this whole business of respect in all racial communities with attention to those who are going in the right direction and those that are going in the wrong. We all should be honest enough to learn from each other in terms of those going in the right direction and those who are going in the wrong direction. Throwing out statistics for the sole purpose of throwing mud in one group or the other's face is not productive, but we need to be honest about the statistics and what they mean.

The fact is that we have not been able to reverse the trend and we have all kinds of social problems as well as economic problems as a result. Health Care Numbers
I like to work with numbers to see if I can get better in sight into things like health care. Here is what I already know. The USA spends 17% of our GNP on health care right now and the projection is that when Obama care is at full speed, we will be spending as much as 25%. How much do you think that we can afford to spend and still have any kind of quality of life? The amount is not unlimited. Now, let's look at a few numbers.
I got most of these right off the Internet. The median household income is about $55,000 and has been going down since 2007. We are getting poorer. If the median is $55,000 and the distribution is a straight line down to zero, the average (4th grade math) $27,500 for the lower 50% of house holds. The other number is the size of households and that is about 2.75 people. If the USA were divided into two groups of equal numbers, 50% would be in this lower income group.
My next step is to see what kind of quality of life the people in this lower 50% would have if they had to pay their own bills. This is the way it is in most other countries who do not have as many high income families as the USA to pay their bills. Our total GNP is about $15 trillion and we have about 325 million people. If you just look at the average per person, the number comes out to $46,154. This is a lot different number than the median where the number was $55,000 per household of 2.75. That works out to only $20,000 per person. This is because smart, hard working and well educated people earn a lot more than the average person. Remember that 40% of our kids do not complete high school. Where is this going? Here is where.
If the average GNP per person is $46,154 and we now spend 17% on health care, that means the average person spends $7,846 on health care and it looks like the number will go up to as high as $11,538 with Obama care. This means that the average person in the lower 50% of our population will have to spend 58% of their total income to get the average quality of health care. By any measure we all know that is impossible. How about food and shelter? The cost for health care for a poor person is about the same as it is for a rich person.
We have at least three problems here. First, the total cost of health care as we know it. We can't afford to spend 17% of our GNP on health care. Canada spends 11% and they know it is going to bankrupt them and we are looking at 25%. Second, we have far too many of our people who do not pull their own weight. If you don't, at least, finish high school, you won't be able to pull your own weight. If you are fat and over weight, it is the same thing. If you are socially irresponsible in almost anyway, you will not be pulling your own weight. We have too many poor people and it is mostly their own fault. I only accept mental retardation or physical handicap as a good reason for being poor. Third, we don't have enough rich people to free load off of. Many of our smart people are seduced to go into professions that do not produce any real wealth. We need more true wealth producers.
Now, look at the three problem areas above and ask if you see anything going on that will address anyone of them? I don't. We are doing nothing to bring down the cost of health care. We are allowing more people to live well enough while being poor without any incentive to work their way out. We are not rewarding people who want to create more wealth. We are actually penalizing them. As I have stated in the past, most problems are simple and turn on just a few points. Health care is just that biggest weight in the boat right now and it will sink the boat if nothing is done.

Mercedes E320 Rear Window Failure
Here are the facts. I have a 1998 E320 Mercedes that has had a total of 3 rear window regulator failures. Note, that there are only two rear windows on this model, so one has failed twice. The first one failed after less than 25,000 miles and 10 open and closings and the dealer paid to fix that first one. The second failure of the other door was after the 50,000 mile warranty period so the dealer charged me $400 to fix that one. The one that was fixed for $400 failed again and this time I did not fix it, but applied "duct tape" to hold it up. That is a total of 3 failures.
It just happened that my neighbor used to live in Germany and had as a house guest, the manager from Germany in charge of Safety Feature Quality Control. I showed him the problem and he said that he would talk to the people back in Germany when he got back. Mercedes Benz never got back to me about the rear window problem. The window regulator is made by Busch. For the record, I have a total of 4 other American made cars with automatic windows and I have never had a failure on anyone of them.
I guess that you can not teach old dogs new tricks because I purchased another E320. It is a 2001 and wouldn't you know it? The left rear window regulator failed. I did not even waste my time with the Mercedes Benz dealer this time. I got out the "duct tape" and went to work on the window. The car is silver and so is the "duct tape", so it looks like a professional job that even Mercedes Benz would be proud of.
Are you starting to get the message? Today, I was back into the Mercedes Benz dealer and related my window failure history to him and asked if he has ever heard of the problem. I swear tow God that he sounded just like our President Obama. This was the first time that he had ever heard of the problem. The service manager did the "tap dance" for several minutes while I explained other problems. In all cases, this was the first time he had ever heard of the problems. I asked if there was some kind of system where he provided failure feed back to Mercedes Benz in Germany and he said that there was no such official system. Does that give you any confidence in Mercedes Benz? That may be one of the reasons that they lost WWII.
I am not finished yet. I had another problem with my 1998 E320 and that was with "rust". I have never had a car of any kind that had so much rust as this car. I have dug up bean cans that were buried in the ground for over 10 years that had less rust. We are talking about serious rust. One day, my wife had just parked the car in the garage and was walking out when the car seemed to have exploded. When I investigated the problem, I found that the spring purch had rusted off and the front wheel spring flew out. Had she been in line with the spring, it could have killed her. We are talking about a 10# spring that had about 1,000# of force on it flying out. I took the car back to the Mercedes Benz dealer and they refused to pay for or repair the problem. They did sell me a repair kit, but I had to fix the car myself. The fact that they had a kit, should have tipped me off that they knew all about this problem. After this fix, the car was fine except for all the rust. The car continued to rust until my wife refused to be seen in it. At that point, I put the car in the garage and started looking for a new car. One day it went to move the car out of the garage and noticed that one side was lower than the other. I suspected a flat tire, but when I checked, the spring purch on the other side had failed. At this point I wedged a block of wood into the area where the spring was so that the tire did not rub on the inside of the fender and drove the car to my old car scrap yard. The amazing thing is that after over 250,000 miles the engine still runs fine.
Hope springs eternal and I hope that the good people at Mercedes Benz will find it in their hearts to pay for the failures to my 1998 E320 and admit that they were the cause of my problems.
PS----The story does not end with the 1998 E320. I purchased a 2001 E320 with about 85,000 miles. The car looked brand new and it appeared that no one had ever sat in the back seat. After about 10,000 miles and still no one sitting in the back seat, the left rear window regulator failed. Per my wife, she had only rolled the window down by accident. Count this up as failure #4. Mercedes Benz, where are you?????
PS---Well, now it is 100%. The other rear window in my 2001 E320 has failed. That makes it 100% for the rear windows in two different E320's. Obama's Aid To Egypt
While talking to my friends about the aid that Obama has been sending to Egypt, it has become clear to me that no one is watching Obama's left hand. It seems that all the focus is on his right hand, the one that is giving the aid too Egypt. All they talk about is which group in Egypt is getting the aid and is it helping either the USA or the people of Egypt. Many claim that Obama does not know which group to support. How about you? Now, all this discussion is about what the right hand is doing and no one is looking at his left hand, so here are the real facts.
First, as I have blogged in the past, Obama is a Judas who wants to destroy the USA. His wife is his main helper and she works behind the curtain so that you can not see what she is doing. Now for Obama's left hand. Obama does not care which group in Egypt he helps. He only wants to squander our wealth and bring down the USA. The more money he sends to Egypt, the better in terms of bankrupting the USA. If you notice, any money or planes that we send to Egypt are paid for with money that is borrowed. As a Judas, Obama wants to borrow as much money as he can and put us deeper in debit.
Look at his war on coal or the pipe line or the moratorium on drilling for more oil or his sponsorship of wind and solar energy or electric cars. All of these things weaken the USA economically. How about squandering our borrowed money on student loans to take worthless majors? How about health care. We now spend 17% of our GNP on health care and under Obama Care it will go up to 25%. Isn't that a cleaver way to destroy the USA and do it right under our noses. How about not protecting our borders and letting millions of Mexicans come into the USA and end up "not" paying their way. Remember that 50% of all Americans don't pay income tax and that is about 90% for Mexicans. How about food stamps? Obama thinks we have money to burn, he is burning up our wealth so that he can destroy our country from within.
Now, do you see why Obama seems to be doing stupid things in Egypt? For Obama, they are not stupid. They are just another part of his plan to destroy our country.
PS---Obama is so smart and we are so dumb that he can get away with squandering our tax money and the 20% that we borrow to buy votes. It is a "two-for". He buys the votes and squanders our tax money at the same time. We now have more people getting free food from the Obama government than we do working. If this sounds like Greece or Spain, you have it right. Who do you think is going to pick up the pieces when we hit bottom? Obama does not care. His mission as the Judas will have been accomplished.
Just a final note. Have you tried to buy amo for any of your guns lately? If you can even find them, they now cost 5 or 10 times as much as before Obama was elected. The good news is that Obama did help at least one segment of the economy, guns and amo.

How about squandering our borrowed money on student loans to take worthless majors? How about health care. We now spend 17% of our GNP on health care and under Obama Care it will go up to 25%. Isn't that a cleaver way to destroy the USA and do it right under our noses. How about not protecting our borders and letting millions of Mexicans come into the USA and end up "not" paying their way. Remember that 50% of all Americans don't pay income tax and that is about 90% for Mexicans. How about food stamps? Obama thinks we have money to burn, he is burning up our wealth so that he can destroy our country from within.
Now, do you see why Obama seems to be doing stupid things in Egypt? For Obama, they are not stupid. They are just another part of his plan to destroy our country.
PS---Obama is so smart and we are so dumb that he can get away with squandering our tax money and the 20% that we borrow to buy votes. It is a "two-for". He buys the votes and squanders our tax money at the same time. We now have more people getting free food from the Obama government than we do working. If this sounds like Greece or Spain, you have it right. Who do you think is going to pick up the pieces when we hit bottom? Obama does not care. His mission as the Judas will have been accomplished.
Just a final note. Have you tried to buy amo for any of your guns lately? If you can even find them, they now cost 5 or 10 times as much as before Obama was elected. The good news is that Obama did help at least one segment of the economy, guns and amo.
