Have you ever heard this old saying before? I know you have. The reason that it is so significant is that it is a very good saying. In this blog I will point how exactly why.
It was several years ago that I had a friend who was visiting my farm from Hungary. She was very impressed with my farm and my animals. One evening we went out to the hen house to collect the eggs so that we could have fresh eggs for breakfast the next morning. On the way back my friend had the basket of eggs and tripped suddenly and boke most of the eggs. She still writes letters from Hungary excusing herself for breaking all of my eggs. Why is this an important lesson?
When the USA Constitution was written by the founders, they were concerned about the political history of the world where countries that were founded on freedom were taken over by kings and dictators. To avoid this fear, they did not want any single group to have too much power. That is why the Constitution's main purpose was to limit the authority of the federal government. They left most of the real authority to the 13 individual states. They were even concerned about a single state with a larger population having too much authority too. That is one of the reason that they formed the Senate where each state regardless of its size got two Senators. The bottom line is that the founders of the USA did not want to "put all their eggs in one basket"!
Unfortunately, over time, more and more authority has been taken over and concentrated in the federal government. This is clearly a case of "putting more of our eggs in one basket" and that is not good. Look at the Civil War. In that case when some of the states wanted to leave the USA, there was enough power and authority in the other states to fight a war and prevent them from leaving.
Here is an example where I feel there was a very big mistake by placing more authority in the federal government and that is the federal Department of Education. It has been a slight of hand trick where the federal Department of Education wields its authority over the states with its "bank roll" of money. Because the schools have so much power over our children and the future of the USA more concentration of power in a single central educational authority has to worry everyone. I am not even sure that a centralized authority over education at the state level is worth the risk. Putting all of our educational eggs in a single basket is clearly not worth the risk. You can see the kind of risk that I am talking about with this racial business that is working its way thru our schools and into the heads of our children.
We all understand that we need to be very cautious about "putting all our eggs in one basket". so why don't we practice what we preach?
