Technology Wake Up Call

How about a wake up call?  I have blogged on the fact that our kids have not been keeping up technically for some time.  I know that many of you parents are impressed that your kids are using computers and smart cell phones all day long.  If that isn't keeping up with technology, I don't know what is.  Just a joke.  How about a few simple examples?

What is the main thing that separates humans from animals?  It is the use of tools and we all know that a computer is a very important technical tool and most of our kids know how to use them, or do they?  They use them as fancy telephones and I can tell you that they do not crunch numbers or actually do any programing.  This is just the tip of the ice berg. It goes a lot deeper.

Look at something like the common nail.  How could anything be any simpler or easier to understand?  Simple, right?  When you look the machines that  made that simple nail, it is a very different picture.  They are so complex that not one of your computer whiz kids in 1,000 could design or fully understand how the machine works.  Starting to get  the idea?

How about your fancy computer or  your Apple wrist watch computer?  I know that some of you have purchased these for your kids to help keep them up with cutting edge technology.  The thing that you don't know is that no Apple products are made here in the USA.  Most are made in China or Asia, and like the machine that made the nail, the machines that make your fancy computer are even more complex.  Now, think about where these machines are located and where most were designed and built?  It was in China and Asia!!!  That is where the real technology is located.  It is not in the Santa Clara Valley of California or in the minds of your kids.

Many people only look at imported products as being cheaper or that have put people back here in the USA out of a good paying job.  That is the least of the problem.  The real problem is that it causes the USA and our kids to get farther and farther behind on cutting edge technology while those who are making the fancy high tech products are getting farther and farther ahead of us technically. Remember the machine that made nails?  How complex do you think machines that make computers or HD flat screen TV's are?  Are your kids going to college an taking Political Science or real technical stuff?  You know that they want to make the "honor roll" so they are taking the easiest classes and majors that they can find.  Further, you are letting them get away with it.

Next time you go to the Mall and look at all the high tech products, think about the machine that made those high tech products and the kids in some foreign counties who designed and built those machines.  That is where the real technology is.  Wake up!!!
