We all knew that it was going to come. What is that? Student loan forgiveness! Some Democrat from Michigan who does not seem to know his butt from a hot rock is making this proposal. He was on TV News saying that it would, "help the economy if we would forgive student loans". Here is my position.
I have blogged in the past that far too many of our kids who go to college are not qualified and many never graduate. Many of those who do graduate take simple minded majors that have no chance of paying back their loans. Those kids who were qualified and who took the more difficult technical majors make enough money to pay back their loans. Why should we bail out the kids who were not qualified in the first place, dropped out or took worthless majors? Is that fair? Is it fair to those kids who did the "right" thing. Or, how about the kids who did not go to college, but went out and just worked hard. How about kids who did not take the loans and used their own money? I thought that the big thing these days was "fair".
To my way of thinking about "fair" comes from the story about, "The Little Red Hen". Isn't that the story about the chickens that worked hard and were responsible getting to eat the corn and the ones who did not work or help getting "nothing"? I was raised on the basis that the Little Red Hen was "fair". The chickens that did not get the "free" corn learned a lesson, and that was they needed to work and be responsible if they wanted to get some of the corn to eat. After that simple lesson, the lazy chickens became more responsible and the chickens "all" prospered.
If we don't start now with tough love and hard lessons for our kids who took out student loans and then dropped out of college or earned worthless degrees, when will we? To excuse the student loans only makes the situation worse. This whole country is going to go down the drain if we don't start turning things around. A hard lesson for students who are not paying back their loans is the right thing. Reading in a book about what you should do or how you should act does not get the job done. You have to "walk in the shoes" and get hungry and cold to learn some of life's most important lessons. Let's get started and do it now.
