All most people want is "Simple Justice" and this blog will show how our system has failed.
What I want to do is to compare two very simple cases and ask you if we have had "Simple Justice"? If not then we should all ask ourselves, " why not?" The two situations that I am going to cover are the two deaths that should not have happened. The first one was Floyd in Minneapolis and the other is Babbitt in Washington DC. These may look different and they are, but they are also very similar and will show you exactly what I am talking about.
First, let's look at the Floyd situation in Minneapolis. Here we had a Black man who has tried to pass some bad money so the store call the police. As it turned out the person had a long criminal record and was high on drugs. When the police arrived and tried to arrest him, he resisted. He was a very big man and continued to resist. At one time they had him into the police car, but he got out and ended up on the ground. The police man tried to control him by holding him down on the ground until he stopped resisting and cooperated by getting back in the police car. Floyd continued to resist and not cooperate and the police man continued to hold him down. As it turned out Floyd was over dosed on drugs and died by a combination of the drugs and the pressure applied by the policeman to hold him down. Those are the basic facts.
What happened afterwards was a part of history. The BLM movement capitalized on the situation and made Floyd into some kind of hero, when he was a simple criminal who resisted the police. I think that you know the rest of the story. We are talking about millions of dollars in civil damage in that area of Minneapolis that is still in ruins to this day.
Next there was a trial and the police man who tried to arrest Floyd was convicted of second degree murder and is now awaiting sentencing. He has appeals underway, but who knows what they will end up? The BLM is still on the war path and the situation is far from over. What do you think of our justice system so far? Did our legal system work? Are you proud of our system? We are the ones who will have to finally decide.
Now the situation in Washington DC. It is clear that a bunch of disorganized protesters entered the Capital after a speech by Trump on the mall. So far there have been no guns found with those who entered the Capital. Most people came thru the open doors to the Capital, but some broke windows and entered thru windows. Most of those inside the Capital appeared to be more curious than wanting to damage the place. It looked like security lock many of the doors to hall ways. It is true that some went down on the floor of the Congress and sat in the chairs of the officers. I have been down on the floor of both the Senate and the House so I am familiar with the place.. The security and members locked many of the doors inside the Capital and barricaded most from the inside. The Capital has some old and very strong doors with very thick glass.
Outside of one of those locked and barricaded doors was a group of protesters who were rattling and pounding on the locked doors. Inside out of sight in an office doorway was a security guard,. He could clearly see the group on the other side of the locked doors. I can't read the guard's mind, but I assume he felt that any moment they would come thru the door and confront him. The security guard was clearly not in any immediate danger so he could have left down the hall or shot into the floor or air to discourage those on the other side of the locked door, but he didn't. What he did was to shoot thru the glass door randomly at those on the other side, knowing that his shot would kill someone on the other side. That is exactly what happened. He shot and killed Babbitt who was a women and retired soldier. His shot was clearly intentional and clearly violated 100% of the rules of engagement and the use of lethal force by any police department.
What happened next? They kept the identity of he security guard secret for weeks and when they finally revealed who he was, they did not charge him with any crime or violation. Does this sound like justice to you? In the Floyd case we have a life time criminal who resisted arrest and in the case of Babbitt, we have a law abiding citizen who was just standing inside the Capital. Why is it that ?
