Years ago, I used to think that a really good manager was a person who could solve any type of management problem quickly. If there was a leak in the dike, he could have it fixed in minutes. If the horse got out of barn, he could quickly find the horse and put him back in. If some terrorists killed four of our citizens, he could track down the terrorist and "bring them to justice" in New York City. I was one of the fastest when it came to solving problems and thus, I thought I was a good manager. My company thought so too and promoted me again and again. I even had a friend who claimed he was a great manager and had a proven track record of solving very complex management problems quickly. I had the highest regard for this friend (at the time). Now, you must be asking what is this "One Mover" thing all about. Well, here it is.
Most people would look at the above and agree that being a fast problem solver is a great trait for a good manager, but that is only if, you too, are a "One Mover". Remember my story about Bill Russel the great basketball player? He said that he was able to get more rebounds than anyone else because he went to where the ball was "going to be", not where it was. That means Bill Russel was at least a "Two Mover". He looked ahead. Now, are you starting to see the picture? Good managers don't fix problems, they "prevent" problems. Good managers are at least one jump ahead and see problems coming when they are small and easy to fix. When the government in Washington DC came out with the program where you did not have to put any money down to buy a home, what did you think was going to happen? If you were a "One Mover" you saw this as a great program to get poor people into their own homes. If you were a "Two Mover" you could see down the road to where many of these people would default on their loans and could bring down the economy of the USA. We are now down the road and see what has happened.
I have noticed in interviews of public officials when asked about what they would do if a certain event happened, they always avoid answering the question. No one seems concerned that they did not answer, but I do. We defined the poor manager above and now I want to look at a good manager. You can tell the good ones, because they are at least "Two Movers" and look ahead and plan for the future possibilities. Remember how Obama's people claimed that, "no one could have predicted what was going to happen in Libya"? If you believe that, then you are a "One Mover" too. A good manager would have had a short list of the possible future events that could happen in Libya on 9/11 and an estimate of their chances of happening. For those with a high chance of happening, he would have had a plan in place to "prevent" them or to "react" to them quickly. It is like football, you have your play book and have the plays ready to go. All the quarterback needs to do is to "call" the play. This is what a good manager does if he is not a "One Mover".
I don't want to mix this up with a prior blog, but we know that terrorists are "fungible" and all of them want to kill us. Further, they are willing to die in the process so "bringing them to justice in New York City" is not a deterrent. It does not make our people in Libya any safer. The only thing that makes our people safer is to "prevent" the terrorist from killing our people in the first place. Are you starting to see that Obama is a "One Mover" manager? He knows how to close the barn door after the horse is out and he knows how to track down terrorists after they have killed our people, but he does not know anything about "prevention". Obama, like most "One Movers" wants to have "all" the facts before he acts. We all know that it is impossible to have "all" the facts on anything so what kind of management is that? In football, the quarterback has to call the play before the defense is all set up. A good quarterback normally has a back up play that he can call at the last minute when the defense is set. Why is it so simple to understand in football and so difficult to see in our President? It is because we have a "One Mover" President!!!!
PS-----Isn't it interesting that Obama said that, "I am going to cut red tape to help storm victims....". Notice that he said "going to". Why wasn't this done in advance of the storm. We have a "One Mover" here. Why has Obama looked "way" ahead when it come to Global Warming" and Green Energy. There will be no impact from these possible events until we are all dead. I think that "One Movers" can look ahead a 100 years, but can't look ahead 24 hours, that's the problem. Just more proof that Obama is a "One Mover".
