This might appear to be a strange title, but you will see that it is very significant.
First, I would like to start off with the PID concept. It is the foundation of most control systems and the letters mean (1) Proportionate (2) Integral and (3) Differential. These are common terms from Calculus and are the values that are used to control most control systems. In the end, almost all of our human control systems work on the PID principle. You use this concept to steer you card down the road. The two other items that need to be understood is ""lag" or delay and "feed back". Most of you have experienced a situation where a speaker systems started to squeal loudly. This is a case of a "feed back" where the sound out of the speaker feeds back into the amplifier where it is repeatedly amplified. I know hat most of you will not understand this, but I will refer back to it again and again as I develop my blog.
Now, lets look at how our ecocity operates. We have a "government" and an "invisible hand". To control or operate anything these two are bound by the PID concept of control systems. The problem that most of us have is that we don't recognize the "invisible hand" and we don't understand that any government is bound by PID. I know that is a lot to swallow, but I will explain in more detail.
If we look around, we will see different types of government systems around the world and we will try to judge by their performance if the are good or bad. Our problem is that we are not looking at the total picture when we jump to our conclusions. Both the government and the invisible hand have to be considered. Look at a country like Sweden and you will see that their government works very well, while a country like Mexico has the same type of government and it does not work near as well. Why is that? Is it the government or something else? The bottom line is that the big difference is the difference in how their "invisible hand" works. Look at the USA and you will see the same difference. Why is our murder rate so much higher than Sweden's?
Here is another thing to consider. How about the size of a country? Like a small business and a large business, they operate differently. Smaller countries are closer to their situation and thus can react faster. Think about driving down the road when you are alert and when you have been drinking. In both cases you know how to drive, but in the case where you have been drinking, your reactions are slower. You weave all over the road.
Look at the USA, we are one of the largest countries in the world and over the past few years our economy is moving faster. It is like driving a car faster and faster in heavier and heavier traffic. Now, what do you think will happen? Does it look a lot like the USA today compared with 50 or 75 years ago? Yes. This is totally predictable if one has a full understanding of PID control systems.
In a prior blog, I pointed out how fast the "invisible hand" operates to shop and react to gasoline prices. There is no way that any government of any size could do as well and a big government like the USA would end up dead last. In our colleges we see students taking Political Science or Economics, but you never see a class on the "invisible hand". We tend to focus on government to solve our problems and ignore the "invisible hand". Why is that? Look at the murder rate in Japan compared to the USA. Why is it so low in Japan and so high in the USA? The reason is the "invisible hand". wo why don't our colleges have classes on how to strengthen or modify the "invisible hand"? There are more of our kids who are Political Science Majors than any other. Math and real Science are way down the list and no one is majoring in the "invisible hand".
