Have you ever thought about what would happen if you got what you hoped for? It might not be what you think. I posted a blog several years ago about a new drug that I invented that would keep anyone alive. It was a miracle drug like no other. No matter what your health problem was, this drug would prevent you from dying. In that blog, I was very concerned about if I should or should not bring this miracle drug to market. What do you think concerned me? That is what this new blog is about.
Obamacare was a good idea except for one key thing. What was that? We could not afford it! It cost more than we had to pay for it. I think that you know that there are a lot of things that would be nice to have but you know that we could not afford them. Would it be nice to eat T-Bone teaks every night? How about drinking only the best wine that cost $100 a bottle." I think that we all know that there are many things that exist in the world that not all of us can afford. How about college degrees? We have a government program that guarantees loans for students to take any degree that they want, including even dropping out before they even earn a degree. It was a nice idea, but again, we can not afford it. We now are all on the line for $1.4 trillion in debit for these students. You know that we can not afford that program either. My point is that our government can pass any law, even if we can not afford it. What if they passed a law that would add 50 points to the IQ of our kids? We now graduate our kids based on age rather than learning what they need to learn. That is dishonest too.
Now, back to my old blog about my miracle drug. My drug would keep millions of people alive and consuming our wealth for years beyond the age when they used to die. While staying alive would appear to be good, in the process, it would kill our economy and our standard of living. If I were to have put this drug onto the market, it would bankrupt this country and lower our standard of living to the level of a 3rd world country.
The bottom line is that we all need to thing ahead about whether we can really afford something that our government could pass. I think that renewable energy is a good example of this. It is true, that we could all keep warm if we rubbed our hands together hard enough, but we would not live that lone in the process. It is also true that we could get energy from the wind, but again, we could not afford it. To do it we would have to significantly lower our standard of living. It is like the old saying, "You can't have your cake and eating it too." It applies to a lot more situations than you think.
The bottom line is that you should not hope for "pie in the sky" because you might be killed by pie falling on you!!
