I think that I am starting to understand a way to help Blacks be more socially responsible. It comes from the church model. That is what this blog is about.
Let's start by looking at what happens in church. Normally, the whole family goes to church together. This starts when the kids are very young, even before they start going to school. The fact that the kids start young is important. The fact that the parents are there with the kids shows the kids that this business of church is very important. The fact that parents don't go to school with the kids shows the kids that school is not near as important as church. When kids act up in church, the parents are there to correct them. If the Sunday school teacher corrects one of the kids, the parent does not attack the Sunday school teacher the way that they do public school teachers. This is another way that parents show their kids that public school teachers are not to be trusted or taken seriously.
While the kids are separate in a Sunday school class, the parents are also in class. This is the perfect model showing the kids that church is serious. The church promotes important factors that kids will need to know as adults. Things like honesty, personal responsibility, thrift and compassion for others. If these things are not taught starting at an early age, I contend that the kids will never accept them. We know that it works with the church model, so why wouldn't we expect that it would work to get Blacks to be more socially responsible?
What if something was created similar to church where the whole family would go together and the parents would learn basic things that they need to know, such as, accounting, simple economics, nutrition and healthy practices. The fact that many Blacks are over weight or do drugs could be addressed while their kids watched and got a lesson of how serious these things are. If the parents are not responsible, it is a model for their kids, a bad model! Are you starting to see how focusing on the parents while their kids watch or participate just might get the positive changes in the Black community that all agree are needed.
Look at models in the Black community that work. The parents are positive models for their kids. It is not perfect, but a lot better than many Black families who have poor adult role models. Black young people are not going to be changed by do-gooder White people alone. More Black positive models are needed. If the children live in a household with an unwed mother, then it will have to be the mother to be the positive role model. Some how Black super star athletes need to accept the role that they play in the Black community. They can't turn their backs as though they are not part of the problem or the solution. Think about how well the church model works and how it could be used to help the Black community!
