Many years ago I was at a family BBQ with my father and his brother. It was one of those special times when they treated me as an adult equal. Most of you know when that point occurred in your relationship with your father. It was special. As the conversation went on, the subject of being a "friend" came up. I stepped forward with the question for the two of them about which one of them was the "best" friend. It might sound strange, but it had a purpose. I then asked the two of them this simple question. "Would you tell your best friend that his wife was running around on him, if you knew?" It did not take more than 10 seconds for the two of them to respond. My father said that he did not think he would tell his "best" friend that his wife was running around on him. My uncle immediately burst out that "Hell yes, he would". I ask you now, what would you have answered? My position is that if you are really the person's "best" friend you would certainly tell. How many of you know people who have gone thru this type of situation and were "the last to know"? They know that you knew and what kind of friend you were. How does that make you feel? Now "What is your price?"
If you got the message from the above, read on. I have been talking to people about how they would vote and many said that they would vote on the basis of what was "best" for them. Now if we take this a little farther, what do we find? If you vote for candidate "A" and he promises that he will provide funds for your kid to go to college and candidate "B" promises that he will not provide government money for your kid to go to college. Which way would you vote? Would you vote for "A" or "B"? Most of the people who I talked to said they would vote for "A" because it would help their kids. Sounds OK doesn't it? How about people who do not have kids? Where does the money come from that your kid will get? Did you ever consider "what is right" or just what you could "get"?
The point of this blog is to try to point out that when you are asked to make a decision, shouldn't you try to make the "right decision". It is like someone who left their purse behind on the bus. What should you do? Take the money and leave the purse or find the person who lost their purse and get it back to them? We have a lot more decisions like this to make than you may think. Voting is just one of the most public examples, but if you have gone thru life making decisions based on the knee jerk "what is good for me" you may have a difficult time making a vote that is best for you, your kids and your grand kids.
Would you tell your best friend that his wife was running around on him? Are you a "good" friend of the United States? That is what this is all about. What is your price?
