It is off to the races again with the "Green Movement". With Biden on board, many think that things have really changed. This blog will remind you of some facts.
First off, we need to understand the sources of energy. That is because there is agreement on the need and value of energy, but not on its source. Most realize that our standard of living is directly related to energy and particularly to the cost of energy. Further, here on Earth where we all live, there is a limited supply of energy. Most people never thought about that fact. Here is an important point that needs to be made and that is our limited energy has to be divided up between the number of people here on Earth. It is true that some people are getting a bigger share than others and the result is that some have a higher quality of life than others. With me on these basic facts?
Next, exactly what are those sources of energy and how big are they? I think this is a good list. All energy but nuclear comes from the Sun where their energy is actually nuclear. My list is:
* Hydroelectric power
* Solar electric power
* Wind electric power
* Coal
* Oil
* Natural gas
* Wood
* Nuclear
What is it about these sources of energy is the Green Movement so concerned about? It is those that put Carbon Dioxide gas into the air. Those are Coal, Oil. Natural Gas and Wood. Note also that wood or trees actually take Carbon Dioxide gas out of the air. All of these sources require some kind of equipment, machines or infrastructure to capture their energy and thus they create Carbon Dioxide before they can capture and Green Energy. Remember that. There is no "free lunch" here. I used the word "capture" because none of these systems actually make any energy.

* Hydroelectric power---The Green Movement has prevented the building of any new dams on our rivers to collect hydroelectric power so that will not be expanded and if it were, it is still very limited so we can forget that one.
*Solar Electric Power--This looks like a great one until they try to put it into your back yard. The biggest problem with this one is that the infrastructure costs more than the value of the power collected. The only way that it appears to work is that our government has passed laws that force you tho use and pay more for Solar energy. If it were a free market, Solar energy would be dead. What do you do for power at "night"? Go back to coal!
*Wind power---The case against wind power is the same as for Solar. The supply is limited and the cost is far too high. It is not a solution. When the government forces you to pay more some thing than it is worth, the effect is to lower your quality of life and standard of living and no person with a brain would want that. What do you do when the wind does not blow? Go back to natural gas!
*Coal--Coal is interesting Not only is it a cheap source of energy, it is an important chemical for the smelting of iron ore into steel. I do not know of any substitute for smelting iron ore, do you? Much of the energy in coal is in the form of Carbon like it or not. If we had more trees or fewer people, coal would be one of our preferred sources of energy. Why don't we plant more trees or implement better population control? The USA has more coal than any country in the world. Eventually when humans start dying of starvation we will b back to burning coal
*Oil---Oil like coal has much of its energy in the form of Carbon which when burned creates Carbon Dioxide. The big advantage is that it is a dense form of energy that can economically power cars, trucks, ships and airplanes as well as heat our homes. The elimination of oil will give a new mane to "sailing" to Europe. We will never run out of oil, just like we have not run out of "Whale Oil"!
Wood--The is what provided heat for us humans for the past million years, but with the larger population and expectation of a higher quality of life, wood has become a novelty rather than a significant source of energy. Sorry but having those kids has a big draw back!
Nuclear---This is the "end game" when it comes to energy. As mentioned above, 100% of our energy comes from nuclear and it is also one of the safest. Russia had a problem with one of its nuclear power plants because is was an antique plant using Graphite rather than the modern design. Japan had its problem because of the location of its nuclear power plant next to the ocean where they knew it risked being damaged by a tsunami. Stupid, just another case of "not in my back yard"
Now, back to Biden. If he eliminates oil, coal and nuclear, what is left? What will your quality of life go down too? How will you feed your children? Ask Biden these questions.
