How about this title? How are these related? That is the question and I think that I have the answer. I was talking to a conservative friend who had just been working with a group of both liberals and conservatives. Here was his observation. "The liberals seemed to work together a lot better than the conservatives and I could not understand why?" My explanation may seem too simple, but when you have the correct answer, it normally turns out to be simple. First, a little example.
Seems that you live on this street of nice homes with both liberals and conservatives. One of the liberals as well as one of the Conservatives are lawn care nuts. They both maintain perfect lawns. Most of the other people on your street just take average care of their lawns. With me so far? Here is where the liberal and the conservative differ. Both of you would like for the others on your street to do a better job of maintaining their lawns so the neighborhood would look better. Now, the liberal will go and talk to his neighbors and try to get them to unit with him to pass a law that would require the other neighbors to take better care of their lawns. The conservative just complains and puts up with the fact that his neighbor has the right to care for his lawn anyway that he wants. Since the conservatives don't think it is right to tell or force their neighbor to take better care of their lawn, the Conservatives don't team up like the liberals. The conservatives are not "united" like the liberals. Isn't that the way it works on a national basis?
Liberals are "team" players and want to go along with the will of the "group". Remember "group think"? Conservatives believe in the individual. Look at our kids today. Do you think they are aligned with "group think"? Look at how they dress. Look at how they avoid the hard technical classes in school. Look at how Face book and some of the other media web sites have developed. Do you think that young people are more liberal or conservative? Easy one!
Remember that this country started off with mostly farmers and small towns. Now we have giant cities and a very small percentage of our people on farms. Most people forget that farms are businesses which means that we started off with a lot more business people than we have now. It was rare for farmers to be part of groups, but not for our urban population today. In my 4th grade class there were only 5 kids. How could you develop "group think" out of that?
When you have liberals joining "group think" ,it is natural for them to want to force their will onto smaller groups and individuals like conservatives. How can an individual stand up to a big group? It is very difficult. Liberals tend to think in terms of the will of the majority because in most groups, that is the way it works. Conservatives, on the other hand, who are not part of groups have to fall back on the Constitution for their protection from the will of the majority. How many times have you heard some liberal claim that they were correct because most people agreed with them? It happens all the time. Remeber when most of the people on Earth thought the Earth was "flat"? Being in the majority does not mean you are right! It also follows that, by definition, the will of the majority is "correct" and the fact that some conservative is standing in the way means the conservative is either stupid or stubborn. Once the liberal has come to this conclusion, he pushes on with even more force to "do what is right".
I am sorry, but the conservative is not a group think person and thus will always be fragmented and in the minority. Liberals are sheep and like to flock, while conservatives are like cats and want to be left alone.
Oh, I almost forgot about Darwin. Conservatives think that Darwin has done a prety good job so far while the liberals want to conteract Darwin at every turn. If a river floods, liberals want to dam it up. If a forest fire starts, liberals want to put it out. If someone drops out of school and can not afford a nice home Darwin would let them live in a shack, but liberals want to give him a nice home. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
